Bat and moth walk

Colleen of the Hampshire Bat Group told us about a research project into the rare Barbastelle and Bechstein's bat species in the New Forest, sponsored by the National Park. The New Forest is a stronghold for both species. In fact, there are an estimated 17 species of bats in the UK - 13 of them can be found in the New Forest. Roosts of both these rare species can be found in the area we're walking.
Barbastelle bats are very fast and can fly up to 30km in a night whereas Bechstein's are a lot quieter and tend to only go short distances. Now we're off to try out the bat detectors!
